Deadly Paradise: Barren Lands Of Coober Pedy And The Life Underground

Coober Pedy is a little town located in northern South Australia which was established in 1915 following the discovery of opal by a 14-year-old. This place is known as the "opal capital of the world" producing the largest amounts of opal than any other part of the world. The chief occupation is mining and the silent lands of this place feed about 3,500 people out of which 80% live underground.


 Calm and lifeless

While the ground level of Coober Pedy seems dull and silent to some people, there are others too who love to pierce the silence of this place by visiting here and experiencing the life of living underground.


Safe haven 

To avoid the burning heat and dust, people here are settled in the undergrounds. The cozy and hardworking lifestyle of these people make some people think of settling here.

This bizarre town has been featured in many movies like, The Fire In The Stone, The Ground Zero, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and others.


Bleak on the outside and enticing inside

The town of Coober Pedy was unhospitable and it was difficult to survive with the enormous heat and humidity. They initially made 'dugouts' and then started to build little homes where they could live peacefully and after a decade they started building up public amusement places like museums, casino, bars, bowling, gaming points and much more.

 Apart from a few bars, a town pub and other entertainment sections, people in this town have good access to medical facilities, schools, shops, churches and police station too.

The undergrounds are well ventilated to keep the temperature modulated

The ground level is well marked with danger signs and you can find some cool t-shirts, flags, mugs and key chains with these danger signs as a memento.


Hotels and hostels.

The place is flooded with lavish hotels and hostels for all the backpackers out there. You can opt. for a place to spend some quality time depending on the amount you wish to pay. The desert cave hotel is the most famous amongst all of them.


Travel & tourism

The people are mainly dependent on tourism and mining thereafter you can look out for abundant adventure sports like golf, hiking, camping and other attractions like spas, casinos, art galleries and festival shows.
